Locomotive Volleyball Association was incorporated as a non-profit in 2023. Primarily focused on beach volleyball in the summer, Locomotive also offers traditional and sitting volleyball experiences.
Head coach Ian Bennett spent most of his summers from 1996 to 2005 playing as much beach volleyball as he could. He was very fortunate to be coached by South African Jason Kreuger and Canadian legend, Tony Wells. He holds beach coach training from Volleyball Canada, the FIVB, and Art of Coaching. He is also a Volleyball Canada Learning Facilitator, Coach Evaluator and a faculty member at the University of Lethbridge (Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education).
All Locomotive coaches have formal beach coach training. Hard court and sand volleyball have many transferable components, but also some significant intricacies. The beach experience is far better under the guidance of trained beach coaches. Each year we are fortunate to have a mix of experienced and established coaches as well as university students who are coaching with us as an applied part of their Kinesiology degree. These students immerse themselves in leading youth sport while conducting research on various pertinent topics.
Sunshine, music, volleyball, and friends - beach volleyball has so many benefits. If you are pursuing indoor volleyball it is one of the best ways to improve every skill and your ability to read the game and cover the court. Coaches are relatively absent in competition, forcing some problem solving and teamwork with your partner. Training in the sand provides an excellent strength and conditioning stimulus while having less impact than training on a hard surface.
